Animal Health in the Developing World initiative launched

25 October 2003

The Wellcome Trust has launched a new £25 million global initiative focusing on diseases of livestock in the developing world, and their impact on human health and wellbeing.

The Animal Health in the Developing World initiative has been launched with a call for biomedical research proposals. Researchers are encouraged to tailor their proposals to meet both the requirements of local livestock keepers and the practicalities of life in developing countries.

Projects are expected to involve multidisciplinary teams, drawn from different countries, particularly developing countries, and will provide research training and capacity building for those living in developing countries.

The Wellcome Trust is also planning to support research or activities that promote the translation of research outcomes into practical benefits and establish and strengthen partnerships between scientists and the beneficiaries of research (livestock keepers, community policy makers and animal health practitioners).
