Imagine winners

30 October 2003

Winners of the 'Imagine' photography competition were announced in August 2003. Organised in conjunction with the BBC, the competition invited amateur photographers to submit work inspired by DNA, genes and heredity. It was launched in April 2003, as part of the Wellcome Trust's celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA.

Competition entries were submitted in two categories, individuals and schools, and the winners ranged in age from 12 to 76 years. Old Palace School of John Whitgift, Croydon, won the schools' first prize of photographic equipment to the value of £2000 for seven striking pictures addressing the question, 'what sets me apart?' First prize in the adult category was shared by Ben Roberts for 'DeoxyribonucleicWHAT?!', a contemplative study of himself revising for a science exam, and Andy Milne's powerful image of a Chinese boy - 'One precious chance to pass on the family genes, one precious chance of inheritance' - commenting on China's one-child policy to prevent population growth.

Selected images from the competition will be on display at the Royal Albert Hall in London from 29 September 2003 to 1 December 2003.
