Dr Lindsay Prior

Dr Lindsay Prior is Reader in Sociology at Cardiff University. His previous post was Senior Lecturer in Social Research Methods. He has recently completed a three-year secondment to the University of Wales College of Medicine where he was involved in a series of research programmes, many of which were related to the study of health and risk. The latter included research into the nature and impact of risk assessments in cancer genetics (funded by the Economic and Social Research Council), and a study of lay perceptions of risk relating to influenza vaccinations for older people (funded by the National Assembly for Wales, NHS Research and Development Office).

A good deal of his current work is executed in collaboration with colleagues in psychological medicine. Studies relating to the prescription of antidepressants in General Practice, the recognition of Alzheimer's disease in people with Down's Syndrome, and the development of patient and carer friendly outcome measures of traumatic brain injury all figure in the research portfolio. His interest in genetics and insurance stems from a wider concern with the concept of 'risk' as its variously understood by medical professionals, the lay public, and expert risk assessors.
