Investment Committee

The Board of Governors determines the broad structure of the Trust’s asset management arrangements. Responsibility for implementation is delegated to the Investment Committee and the Investment team.

Sir William Castell (Chairman), Chairman of the Wellcome Trust

Sir William became Chairman of the Investment Committee in May 2006, having joined the Board of Governors in January 2006. Previously President and CEO of GE Healthcare and Vice-Chairman of the General Electric Company (GE), he remains a director of GE, now as a non-executive director. Before that, Bill was CEO of Amersham plc for 15 years. Earlier in his career, he held various positions with the Wellcome pharmaceutical company, which was then owned by the Wellcome Trust. He became a non-executive director of BP plc (formerly British Petroleum) in July 2006.

Alan Brown, Governor of the Wellcome Trust

Alan Brown read natural sciences at the University of Cambridge before starting a career in the investment management industry, where he has worked for almost 40 years. He has held positions as a chief investment officer for the past 23 years, most recently as an Executive Director at Schroders.

Alan's other responsibilities include Chairman of the Board of the Carbon Disclosure Project, and Chairman and Treasurer of the Foundation Board for the Centre for Economic Research and Graduate Education in Prague. He is a Director of the Investment Management Association, an alternate member of the Takeover Panel and a non-executive director of Pool Reinsurance Company, a scheme established to provide cover for losses arising from terrorism.

Damon Buffini, Governor of the Wellcome Trust

Damon Buffini was educated at St John's College, University of Cambridge, where he read law, and at Harvard Business School, where he gained an MBA. He is a founding partner of Permira, a European private equity firm with global reach. He was managing partner from 1999 to 2007 and chairman from 2007 to 2010.Under his leadership, Permira's funds under management grew from €1.9 billion to over €20 billion and the firm expanded its international network of offices from four to 12. Over the same period, Permira helped to grow and build numerous successful businesses across Europe, including Homebase, Inmarsat and global aviation services group Jet Aviation.Damon is a co-founder of Social Business Trust, an initiative to grow social enterprises by using the knowledge, skills and capital of UK businesses thereby benefitting one million people in the UK. He is also a main board member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a trustee of the Royal Anniversary Trust, which administers The Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education.

Tim Church, external member

Tim is president of MIO Partners Inc., the McKinsey Investment Office. Tim joined McKinsey in 1991 to start and head up the firm's European investment activity, taking over the running of global activity in 1997. Prior to that, he was a director of Advent Ltd, a UK-based venture capital firm. He qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse in London.

Peter Davies, Governor of the Wellcome Trust

Peter is currently a senior limited partner at Lansdowne Partners, an investment partnership dedicated to absolute return products, where he also sits on the Management Committee and is jointly responsible for the UK Equity Strategy. This strategy was established in 2001 and has become the largest fund of its type in the UK. Prior to that he was a Director at Merrill Lynch Investment Management (previously Mercury Asset Management).

Sarah Fromson, Head of Investment Risk and Performance at the Wellcome Trust

Sarah was previously Chief Investment Risk Officer at Royal Bank of Scotland Asset Management.

Simon Jeffreys, Chief Operating Officer of the Wellcome Trust

Simon Jeffreys joined the Trust in March 2009, having previously been Chief Administrative Officer for Fidelity International. For most of his professional life Simon was a partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he was the global leader of the firm's investment management and real estate practice.

Naguib Kheraj, external member

Naguib Kheraj is Vice Chairman of Barclays Bank plc. He was previously a Director and Member of the Group Executive Committee of Barclays.

Mr Kheraj was formerly Chief Executive Officer of JPMorgan Cazenove and has held senior positions at Lazard, Robert Fleming and at Salomon Brothers in London.

Mr Kheraj serves on a number of international Boards within the Aga Khan Development Network in the fields of education, healthcare, rural development and culture, and is Chairman of its endowment fund. He is also a Member of the Board of the UK-US Fulbright Commission and a Non-Executive Director of the National Health Service Commissioning Board.

David Mayhew, external member

David Mayhew is Chairman of JP Morgan Cazenove and a Vice Chairman of JP Morgan. He joined Cazenove & Co. in 1969 from Panmure Gordon. In 1972 he became the firm's dealing partner and was subsequently responsible for the Institutional Equity Department. In 1986 he became the partner in charge of the firm's Capital Markets Department. He became Chairman of Cazenove Group plc on incorporation in 2001 and JPMorgan Cazenove in 2005 on the setting up of the joint venture with JPMorgan. David was appointed Chairman of Cazenove Capital Holdings in 2005. He was a non-executive director of Rio Tinto Limited and Rio Tinto plc from 2000 to 2010, and is a member of the Takeover Panel Appeal Board and a Trustee of the Royal Anniversary Trust.

Nick Moakes, Head of Equities and Emerging Markets at the Wellcome Trust

Nick was previously the Head of the Asia Pacific investment team and co-head of Emerging Markets at BlackRock Investment Management.

Stewart Newton, external member

Stewart is Chairman of Veritas Investment Management LLP. Founder Partner of The Real Return Group in 2003. Founder and Chairman of Newton Investment Management 1977 to 2002. Director and Portfolio Manager Ivory & Sime 1968 to 1977. Investment Analyst W. Greenwell 1963 to 1968. Other: Council Member of Imperial College; Chairman of the committee advising the Council on the College Fund; Director of The Herald Investment Trust plc; non-executive director of HSBC Holdings plc 2002 to 2008; the investment board of Cambridge University 2006 to 2010. Education: Chartered Accountant.

Peter Pereira Gray, Managing Director, Investment Division

Before joining the Trust, Peter was Director: Property Fund Management at Prudential on an award-winning portfolio.

Peter Rigby, Governor of the Wellcome Trust

He was trained as a molecular biologist at Cambridge and Stanford, California, and has since worked at Imperial College, the MRC National Institute for Medical Research and the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), all in London. From 1999 to 2011, he was Chief Executive of the ICR, where he remains as Professor of Developmental Biology, working on the regulation of gene expression during the development of the embryo. He serves as a member of the Council of Marie Curie Cancer Care. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a Member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation.

Danny Truell, Chief Investment Officer of the Wellcome Trust

Danny Truell joined the Trust in 2005, having previously been a Managing Director of Goldman Sachs and Co. in its investment management division. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs in 1996, Danny's career was focused on Asian financial markets.

Sir Mark Walport, Director of the Wellcome Trust

Mark was appointed as Director of the Wellcome Trust in June 2003. Before joining the Trust, he was Professor of Medicine and Head of the Division of Medicine at Imperial College London where he led a research team that focused on the immunology and genetics of rheumatic diseases. He was appointed a member of the Council for Science and Technology in 2004.
