Strategic Awards fund ambitious initiatives across the breadth of the Wellcome Trust's interests. In particular, these Awards support research to address the challenges outlined in the Trust’s Strategic Plan 2010-20.
Strategic Awards are highly flexible and provide support that might otherwise be unavailable through our other funding schemes. They give us a mechanism that is both versatile and responsive to significant funding opportunities.
Preliminary applications for individual Strategic Awards may be submitted at any time and are assessed on a rolling basis.
From time to time we also use targeted calls for Strategic Awards to develop and support strategically important topics within and across our five challenges.

Strategic Awards in Biomedical Science are awarded to excellent research groups with the best ideas and can be used in support of a range of activities.

Past funding resulting from targeted calls within the strategic themes also include Strategic Awards in Genome-wide Association Studies and awards to develop institutional capacity to support health research in Africa through the creation of new international consortia.
Strategic Awards in Technology Transfer support exceptional projects that - due to the combination of potential high impact, risk, scale or complexity - warrant strategic status to provide a high level of momentum for the project.
