In the Zone is a touring exhibition conceived and delivered by At Bristol which forms one of the two key initiatives of the Trust’s larger
In the Zone project.It is an interactive experience for all the family, providing a fun, free and fascinating way to discover how your body works during sport, movement and rest. The exhibition will tour from March to September 2012 around the UK.Visitors will join a team of intrepid investigators with hi-tech interactive exhibits, a live stage show and busking as they ask the question ‘Just how amazing are you?’, and share their findings with friends and family through social media.The exhibition content covers the major human body systems relating to sport, activity and movement. The exhibits include: Power Zone – capture your movement on a high-speed camera to find out how high you can really jump; Blood Zone – get under your skin to see the patterns of your veins, to discover your very own transportation system; Strength Zone – get colourful with thermal imaging to explore muscles, energy and fatigue; Reaction Zone – sharpen up your reaction times to investigate how your brain keeps everything coordinated; and, Speed Zone – test your speed off the blocks and race for gold in a show-stopping finish.

Y Touring are looking to consolidate their work over the last 21 years and strategically build on it, engaging audiences and partners in a dialogue and delivering projects on topics that audiences (particularly young people) find difficult to access in other ways.This project will create, develop and produce five new plays, each exploring a different facet of biomedical research and its implications for human health, the first of which, Dayglo, focuses on pharmacogenetics. Y Touring aim to use a combination of electronic voting and social networking groups to capture feedback from their target audiences.
Debating Matters

The Debating Matters sixth-form competition and the Battle of Ideas festival are flagship projects of the Institute of Ideas that promote open, critical and engaging discussion of contemporary issues. Debating Matters, established in 2002, is a debating competition that puts sixth-form students under intellectual pressure to engage in high-level and well-informed debate of the key issues facing society.Students are required to appreciate the complexities and nuances associated with competing perspectives and claims, whilst at the same time formulating and defending a clear and coherent line of argument.The Battle of Ideas was established in 2005 as an open public space for lively debate and contestation. The weekend festival at the Royal College of Art has sold out every year, establishing itself as a leading UK intellectual festival covering cultural, social, political, economic and ethical issues. It features some 100 debates (including its satellite programme), 350 national and international speakers and 2,000 attendees for the weekend, drawing considerable interest from media, opinion formers and policymakers alike.Trust support will enable the Institute of Ideas to maintain, grow and develop the flagship Debating Matters UK competition; to develop resources to share knowledge and support independent activity; to develop a sustainable Debating Matters India competition; and to explore opportunities to encourage and support schools and organisations in other countries to trial Debating Matters. The grant will also allow the Institute of Ideas to include a strong focus on debates relating to biomedical issues every year at the Battle of Ideas.
Brought to Life
Science Museum

'Brought to Life' is a website provided by the Science Museum, offering access to images of thousands of fascinating objects from the Museum's great medical collections, notably the Wellcome collections on permanent loan to the Museum. The site also incorporates detailed descriptions, introductions to major themes in the history of medicine and engaging multimedia. The site is a valuable resource for teachers and students working on the history of medicine, and related subjects, in schools and universities. Beacons for Public Engagement

The Trust is a partner in the Beacons for Public Engagement project with the Higher Education Funding Councils and Research Councils UK. The project supports six Beacons across the UK as well as the
National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement in Bristol. The Beacons are university-based collaborative centres to help support, recognise, reward and build capacity for public engagement work across the UK.
