Science on Stage and Screen

The Science on Stage and Screen awards scheme was first launched in 1998 and ran for a second time in 2000/2001.

The scheme sought to engage the public's interest in biomedical science or human health, through the support of new drama, film/video, television and multimedia productions. Awards of up to £40 000 were provided to realise the production of the most creative project proposals. All funded projects shared the common aim of encouraging discussion and understanding of contemporary biomedical issues among diverse audiences.

Symposium 2002

As part of the Liverpool Biennial festival of contemporary art, Science on Stage and Screen and Sciart presented a joint symposium event on 26-27 September 2002. The two-day event was hosted by the Liverpool School of Art and Design and John Moores University, Liverpool.

Aimed at scientists, artists, students and interested lay people, the symposium provided a setting to enable overlapping science and art communities to meet, share ideas and view new work.

Science on Stage and Screen: Thoughts on a Wellcome Trust conference [PDF 88KB]

This essay by Stephen Webster documents the Science on Stage and Screen conference event that took place at the Wellcome Trust in December 1999. It records some of the key discussion points raised by attendees regarding the award-winning creative projects that were supported by the Science on Stage and Screen scheme. The essay also highlights some of the wider issues relating to creative collaborations between artists and scientists in general, and aims to stimulate ideas and future applications to the scheme.

The artistic and scientific communities were well represented at the conference by a broad range of practitioners, e.g. theatre directors, TV/new media producers, health professionals, social scientists, performance artists, research scientists and science educators.
