Support for archives and records

New criteria for applications to Research Resources in Medical History

The Wellcome Trust’s Research Resources in Medical History (RRMH) grants scheme continues to support preservation, conservation, cataloguing and digitisation projects for significant medical history collections in libraries and archives in the UK and Ireland. In exceptional circumstances, strategically important collections held in other countries may be eligible for support.

Over the next few years the Wellcome Library intends to digitise its collections, and will identify a number of themes in order to prioritise its collections for digitisation. From 2010 the Research Resources in Medical History grants scheme will be open to applications from other libraries and archives which hold material that will complement these themes and add to a rich and vibrant digital resource.

The theme for 2010 is “Modern Genetics and its Foundations”.

The scope of the theme is to be broadly interpreted and can include, for example archives relating to human heredity, eugenics, cytogenetics, genomics, clinical genetics and population genetics.

Preliminary applications are invited from libraries and archives which have content that relates to this theme.

A preliminary application should contain the following:

  • An explanation of how the content of the collection fits within the theme.
  • A description of the size of the collection, the type of material it contains, and its condition.
  • An estimate of the costs requested and whether the funds will be for preservation, conservation, cataloguing and/or digitisation.
  • Brief CVs of the principal applicants.

The deadline for preliminary applications relating to “Modern Genetics and its Foundations” is 1st March 2010.Eligible applicants will then be contacted by the RRMH grants advisor for further advice and assistance with the application process. The deadline for full applications is 7th June 2010.Funding decisions will be made in July.

Please send preliminary applications and any enquiries to rrmh@wellcome.ac.uk.

Small grants are also available for assessing the content and condition of collections to help prepare for future applications.

We would also be interested to know of other collections that do not fall within this theme, but which may be of general interest to historians of medicine.
