Research Resources in Medical History
Purpose
This scheme provides funding for high-quality projects to catalogue, preserve and digitise significant history of medicine collections with the aim of making such collections available to medical historians and researchers.
From 2010 the scheme will align its activity with the development of a major digital resource based on the digitised collections in the Wellcome Library. The Library will identify a number of themes in order to prioritise its collections for digitisation. The purpose of awards from this scheme is to preserve and catalogue collections that complement the library themes with a view to digitising these collections and sharing the content with the Wellcome Library.
What's included
Projects are normally expected to run for between one and three years but small grants are available for assessing the content and condition of collections to help prepare for future applications.
Most grants awarded are expected to be between £10 000 and £100 000.
Grants may be used to employ fixed-term contract staff in accordance with current legislation, and purchase necessary material, equipment and outsourcing (e.g. digitisation).
Applicants are not required to contribute a specified proportion of project costs, but circumstances will be assessed in each case.
Institutions will be asked to show how much they are willing and able to provide from their own budgets.
Eligibility
The scheme is open to any type of institution in the UK or the Republic of Ireland, but not to individuals. Libraries, archives and repositories in all sectors are eligible. In exceptional circumstances, strategically important collections held in other countries might be eligible.
Collaborative programmes or projects, which may be part-funded by other agencies or sources, will all be considered.
Application process
The scheme has a two-stage application process - brief preliminary applications will be assessed, and then full applications will be invited from a selection of applicants.
Preliminary applications should contain the following:
- An explanation of how the content of the collection fits within the theme.
- A description of the size of the collection, the type of material it contains, and its condition.
- An estimate of the costs requested and whether the funds will be for preservation, conservation, cataloguing and/or digitisation.
- Brief CVs of the principal applicants.
Full applications should be submitted on an application form, which will be provided for invited applicants.
