Purpose

Travel grants fund short-term visits by scholars based outside the UK or the Republic of Ireland to one of these countries.

Visits under this scheme may be to consult libraries or archives and to exchange views or work with colleagues who have similar research interests.

What's included

The grant provides a contribution towards travelling expenses and, in some cases, subsistence expenses.

The maximum award under this scheme is £1500 (although a slightly higher limit may apply in the case of researchers from certain developing countries).

Individual researchers are limited to no more than two awards with a minimum of 12 months between the first visit and the second.

Successful applicants must make their own travel and visa arrangements.

Eligibility

You must be based outside the UK or the Republic of Ireland and be applying to visit one of these countries.

Visits under this scheme may be to consult libraries or archives and to exchange views or work with colleagues who have similar research interests. Study or lecture tours, meetings of a professional or vocational nature, workshops, symposia and international congresses are normally excluded.

Experienced researchers need not be in academic life but will normally be expected to hold a doctorate or clinical qualification and have established a research interest in the history of medicine (i.e. have been published in refereed history of medicine journals and, ideally, have written a monograph on a history of medicine topic).

Trust grantholders whose grants contain a travel allowance are not eligible to apply.
