Purpose

This scheme supports experienced researchers who wish to carry out a modest programme of study on a specific topic in the history of medicine (including veterinary science and dentistry) within the UK and Republic of Ireland.

It also provides modest assistance with research expenses for self-funded, part-time and full-time postgraduate students working for a doctorate on a history of medicine topic.

What's included

Funding may be provided for a maximum of two years.

The normal maximum award payable to postdoctoral scholars is £5000. Individual researchers are limited to no more than two awards with a minimum interval of 12 months between the expiry date of the first grant and the start date of the second.

For self-funded doctoral students, the normal maximum award payable is £3000. Successful applicants are ineligible to apply for further support, as no more than one such award can be made. Funding may be provided for a maximum of two years.

Awards provide a contribution towards expenses normally incurred in travelling to consult libraries or archives, and photocopying costs. They may include the costs of overseas visits.

Support does not include university fees.

Eligibility

Applicants be based in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Experienced researchers in an established academic post will normally be expected to have written some publications in an appropriate field.

Experienced researchers not in an established academic post are expected to possess a doctorate or clinical qualification, and have established a research interest in the history of medicine (i.e. have been published in refereed history of medicine journals and, ideally, have written a monograph on a history of medicine topic).

Self-funded, part-time and full-time students must be registered for a doctoral degree at a university or other institution of higher education in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
