Purpose

Following the 2008 History of Medicine review, Project grants will no longer be available. This content is provided for information only.

Project grants provide funding for high-quality research projects in the history of medicine. They support discrete and focused research programmes of established members of academic staff in universities (and other eligible institutions) in the UK, Republic of Ireland and The Netherlands.

The scheme may also be used to offer an appropriate means of providing postdoctoral experience for young researchers or to encourage the establishment of research programmes by newly appointed university staff members.

What's included

Support is normally for a maximum for three years, and provides:

  • salaries and associated costs for research assistants (if named, please include full CV)
  • funds to cover travel, equipment and other items essential for the research
  • a set amount for the applicant and any research assistants to attend conferences, seminars and other meetings of a scholarly nature.

In exceptional circumstances, applicants may request their salary as part of a project grant.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold an established academic post in a UK, Irish or Dutch university or other institution of higher education.

Individuals whose personal support is provided directly or indirectly by a UK Research Council, government department or cancer research charity should refer to our eligibility information for non-university institutions.

Application process

You should submit a preliminary application in writing, including:

  • a brief CV and full publication list
  • details of research proposed (maximum one page)
  • the approximate cost of the proposal, broken down into salaries, equipment and project running costs.

If your preliminary application is successful, you will be invited to complete a full application.

Deadlines

Applications are accepted three times a year.

Preliminary applications should be submitted at least six weeks before the full application deadline, as described below.

Full application deadline: 1 March, 1 August or 1 December

Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
