Purpose

Programme grants provide support for extensive or long-term research.

Through our long-term funding schemes, we wish to encourage flexibility and allow researchers the opportunity to pursue new ideas and avenues as they arise. Programme grants allow researchers the opportunity to concentrate on research, and establish and retain teams of research workers, without having continually to seek funds from a variety of sources to maintain the group on short-term funding.

What's included

A programme grant normally lasts for five years, and provides:

  • the salaries and associated costs for research assistants (if named, please include a full CV)
  • funds to cover travel, equipment and other items essential for research
  • a set amount for the applicant and any research assistants to attend conferences, seminars and other meetings of a scholarly nature.

The level of support available depends on the needs of the programme, and the amount requested does not need to be above any particular threshold.

Eligibility

Applicants should normally hold an established post in a university or institution in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and should have a good track record of research.

Application process

A preliminary application must be submitted, and should include:

  • brief CVs of the applicant(s), including full publication lists and the source of their salary/salaries (e.g. HEFC/NHS)
  • an outline of the work (up to five pages) explaining the background and aims of the project, and the reason for requesting longer-term support
  • brief CVs of any named research assistants
  • the approximate cost of the programme, broken down into salaries, equipment and project running costs
  • details of all current funding from the Trust and other bodies.

If the preliminary application is successful, a full application will be invited.

Deadlines

Applications are accepted three times a year.

Preliminary applications should be sent in no later than the beginning of January, May or October.

Full applications must be submitted by 1 March, 1 August or 1 December.

Applicants are advised to allow six months from submission of a full application to their preferred start date.
