Short-term Research Leave Awards for Clinicians and Scientists
Purpose
This scheme enables clinicians or scientists to undertake a short-term period of full-time research at a centre or department with academic expertise in medical history, to learn the methods of historical scholarship and to explore the wider determinants and contexts of their own medical and scientific work.
What's included
Awards normally last for three to six months.
We will provide the salary of a locum or replacement lecturer for the duration of the award, and a set amount for travel to conferences.
Eligibility
You should be a clinician or scientist in mid-career, holding an established post to which you would return on completion of the award.
You must be resident in the UK or Republic of Ireland.
You should have a record of publication in medical or scientific journals.
Application process
You should submit a preliminary application in writing, including:
- a brief CV, including details of your salary support and a full publication list
- details of the proposed research (one page maximum)
- a letter of support from the head of the department in which you would work
- an approximate cost of the proposal.
If your preliminary application is successful, you will be invited to submit a full application.
You are encouraged to develop historical research projects in a fairly narrow scientific or clinical area, concentrating on the recent past (e.g. the history of a clinical technique, a therapy, a laboratory method, etc).
Deadlines
Applications can be submitted three times a year.
Preliminary applications should be submitted at least six weeks before the full application deadline, as described below.
Full application deadlines: 1 March, 1 August or 1 December
