Purpose

This scheme enables scholars to undertake basic training in research and methods through a one-year Master's course in the History of Medicine or Medical Humanities.

Strong preference is given to applicants intending to make a long-term academic career in the subject.

What's included

The award is for one year, and includes:

  • the student's stipend
  • all compulsory university and college fees at the UK home postgraduate student level.

Fees at the overseas rate will not be provided.

Eligibility

You should have a minimum of an excellent upper-second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.

Applications will not be considered from those who have already received support for their postgraduate studies from another funding body.

Unsuccessful applicants will normally not be allowed to resubmit in a subsequent year.

Application process

Applications are invited from any UK/ROI university with a History of Medicine or Medical Humanities Master's programme, but the institution may only put forward one candidate. You should therefore contact your institution in the first instance.

You should have a minimum of an excellent upper-second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. You can apply before graduation but must have obtained your degree before taking up the award.

Applications will not be considered from those who have already received support for their postgraduate studies from another funding body or those who have already begun their Master's course.

Unsuccessful applicants will normally not be allowed to resubmit in a subsequent year.

Deadlines

The application deadline is 1 May. Decisions will be announced by the end of June.

Contacts

Applicants should contact their prospective institution to register their interest. The institution can then nominate one candidate to the Trust.

If your institution has not already been notified about these awards, the head of department or research administrator can contact the Trust to obtain an application form.
