The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Manchester

The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Manchester was founded in 1986. With a focus on the period from 1800 to the present, staff work on the social and cultural history of science, technology and medicine as they were practised and experienced.

The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) has an innovative outreach programme and works to use history to inform current debates in science and medicine.

Acting as the principal focus for historians of medicine throughout the North of England, staff collaborate with historians, social scientists, clinicians and scientists across the University of Manchester, neighbouring universities, and medical institutions throughout Britain. Connections with similar groups in Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Granada, and with the major centres in the USA mean that the Centre gains a global perspective and influence.

The five-year Strategic Award on Medicine and Modernity to the Centre in 2006 includes career development positions for postdoctoral fellows and outreach, as well as support for work on diseases of civilisation, ecologies of disease, medical technologies and contemporary history. The Trust has also funded two Programme Grants at the Centre: the first, "Constructing Cancers, 1945-2000", was led by Professor John Pickstone and ran from 2002 until 2009, and the second on the history of Translational Medicine was recently awarded in 2010 to a team led by Professor Michael Worboys.
