Other Wellcome Trust activities in Malawi

The Wellcome Trust is committed to spending £80 million per year on health research in low- and middle-income countries between 2008 and 2012.

Our investment in Malawi includes capacity building efforts such as the Health Research Capacity Strengthening initiative, which seeks to strengthen key academic research and improve the use of health research in evidence-based decision making and policy making in Kenya and Malawi.

The Trust also supports the Karonga Prevention Study, a large-scale research programme monitoring almost the entire population living in the rural Karonga District of northern Malawi. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine received £3m of funding from the Trust in 2006 for the study, which is now providing a platform for studies of HIV, the impact of antiretroviral therapy and bacterial infections.
