Humanities and social science

The Wellcome Trust is dedicated to improving health. We believe this can only be achieved if advances in biomedical research are accompanied by advances in our understanding of the social, cultural and historical contexts of medicine, health and wellbeing. Only with an understanding of those contexts can we address the practical, political and ethical challenges that are raised by the global burden of illness, disease and health disparity.

To that end, we support visionary research in the humanities and social sciences that addresses any aspect of human or animal health.

The research we support can be conceptual or applied, normative or empirical. It can be grounded in the methodologies of just one discipline or located at the intersection of many.

We provide funding not only to established academics but also to early-career scholars and healthcare professionals, and we encourage applications from researchers in academic institutions or any other appropriate research organisation. Support is also available for libraries and archives with important health-related collections.
