What we fund

We fund research into all aspects of biology and medicine: from molecules and cells vital to life, through the spread of diseases or the vectors of disease across the globe, to clinical and public health research that can improve the quality of healthcare delivered to people.

We offer a wide variety of funding, from personal support to grants to cover research and equipment costs. We organise our funding into five streams: Immunology and Infectious Disease; Neuroscience and Mental Health; Physiological Sciences; Molecules, Genes and Cells; and Populations and Public Health.

We fund research that aims to improve animal health. Proposals addressing research into animal health are considered in their own right, on the basis of the importance of the scientific question posed and the excellence of science, regardless of relevance to human disease. Animal health, zoonoses and emerging infections are areas of specific interest within the Trust's International Strategy, and applications are encouraged from eligible individuals based either in the UK or a developing country.

Highlight areas
Biomedical science Highlight areas While we support research in all areas of biomedical science, we are constantly reviewing the current and potential future priorities for this field, and adjust our funding priorities accordingly. The areas we are particularly promoting are highlighted below.

We do not just fund scientists; through our biomedical science grants we support undergraduate and doctoral students, clinicians, dentists and veterinarians. We fund the best researchers with the most innovative and exciting ideas in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and also devote a significant proportion of our funding to support those working overseas, in the form of personal and research support, collaborations and support for symposia, conferences and workshops.
