Personal support schemes

We offer a portfolio of personal support schemes to cover the key stages of a research career. All awardees are provided with a salary or stipend, and a budget for research expenses. Support is available for basic biomedical scientists, clinically-qualified investigators (including clinical psychologists, dentists and veterinarians) and public health researchers.

In addition to our personal support schemes, we offer Investigator Awards. These awards build on our strategic goal of supporting the brightest researchers with the best ideas, and extend our successful fellowship funding model to researchers in established academic posts.

Research projects may be based in the laboratory, the clinic, the office or the field, and may involve experimental or theoretical approaches. Where appropriate, applications are encouraged from candidates trained in disciplines outside the biomedical sciences who are applying their expertise to biomedical problems. We are also keen to support flexible working arrangements where appropriate.

The diagram below provides an overview of the personal support schemes available to researchers based in a UK or Republic of Ireland institution. Most grants are awarded to assist those starting out or in the early stages of their research career. At later career stages, the grants become fewer and more prestigious. Research Career Re-entry Fellowships allow those who have taken a break from research to recommence their career.
