Starter grants for clinical lecturers
Purpose
This scheme provides modest starter funds to enable research active clinical lecturers to pursue their research work, gather preliminary data and further strengthen their applications for longer-term fellowships and funding.
The scheme will only fund research work of the very highest quality, where it is demonstrated clearly that the findings will inform the applicant’s future career aspirations and bids for larger scale fellowships.
The scheme is administered by the Academy of Medical Sciences and is a collaboration with the Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation and Arthritis Research UK.
What's included
The maximum grant available is £30 000 over two years to contribute towards new and directly incurred research costs such as consumables and equipment.
Funding cannot be used for personal salary costs or for research assistants, PhD students or postdoctoral staff.

Eligibility
The scheme is open to medically trained clinicians who have already obtained an MD or PhD and who currently hold a research active clinical lectureship post.

Application process
Applications should be submitted to and will be processed by the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Applicants are required to complete and submit an application form. There are no interviews for this scheme.

Deadlines
Applications are currently considered twice a year, with closing dates in March (for committee review in June) and September (for committee review in December.
