Rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease

X-ray of hand showing rheumatoid arthritis
A Southampton Clinical Research Facility success story.

Investigators explored the underlying mechanisms of morbidity and mortality in rheumatoid arthritis, including the presence of insulin resistance (a major part of the metabolic syndrome).

Their work included investigation of biological therapeutic agents and their effects on insulin resistance and vascular biology.

The paper 'Regulation of Glucocorticoid Receptor and ß Isoforms and Type I 11ß-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Expression in Human Skeletal Muscle Cells: A key role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance?' was published in the 'Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism' (volume 86, no. 5 2296-2308).
