Sir John McMichael Centre

Set up in 2000, the Sir John McMichael Centre comprises two wards embedded in the Hammersmith Hospital. The centre shares its site and many facilities with the Department of Oncology (cancer treatment) at Hammersmith Hospital.
What kind of work is conducted there?
The Centre specialises in early proof-of-concept clinical studies across a range of disciplines, including neuroscience, psychiatry, oncology, rheumatology and metabolic, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine. Studies are usually investigator-led, making the most of the scientific expertise on site and the imaging and technology platforms that support clinical research.
Success stories
- Using Viagra for pulmonary hypertension (March 2005)
- Studies to understand the regulation of appetite (September 2003)
What facilities are on offer?
Facilities include a gene therapy suite and equipment for physiological and metabolic studies. Of the two wards, one provides 24 hour care five days a week and the other is suitable for day case studies.
The Hammersmith campus lays claim to the highest density of state-of-the-art clinical imaging equipment in Europe, hosting four cyclotrons, five PET cameras and five MRI scanners. Imaging techniques developed at Hammersmith are incorporated in study designs to understand how drugs work as well as how well they work.
