Birmingham Clinical Research Facility

Fully operational since June 2001, the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham is a joint initiative between the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust and the University of Birmingham Medical School.
What kind of work is conducted there?
The new programme of research will investigate disease mechanisms, treatments and outcomes in adults and children from various ethnic backgrounds with conditions such as cancer, heart failure, high blood pressure or metabolic diseases including obesity. Which facilities are on offer?
There are video conferencing and live video links from the seminar room to the endoscopy suite to enable teaching.
Other facilities include:
- analytical laboratory, with blood gas analyser, refrigerated centrifuge, microfuge, etc.
- class II laboratory, with tissue culture facilities, FACs analyser, endothelial flow chamber, etc.
- laboratory services, with centrifugation and storage, DNA extraction quantitation and banking, peripheral blood leukocyte preparation and banking, gel electrophoresis, etc.
- training on all techniques
- invasive haemodynamic monitoring room
- cardiac studies suite
- done densitometry.
New funding will allow for gene and cell-based therapy suites for cancer and immune mediated diseases, an enhanced cardiovascular investigation suite and exercise facilities for research into the benefits of exercise in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
