Wellcome Trust-Burroughs Wellcome Fund Infectious Diseases Initiative
Launched in 1998, the Wellcome Trust-Burroughs Wellcome Fund Infectious Diseases Initiative was set up to support trilateral international collaborations between centres in the developing countries and the UK, the USA or Canada, with the 'centre of gravity' of research in the developing world. All of the awards have been concerned with the development of high-quality research programmes with the aim of improving the health of local populations within developing countries.
2000 awards
Six awards, totalling £5.6 million, were made in the final competition. These awards have supported research in countries throughout Africa, South America and Asia, covering some of the major public health problems in the developing world, including tuberculosis, malnutrition and diarrhoea.
