The UK's premier public engagement experience linking science to the Games for everyone in 2012

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are an opportunity to witness countless extraordinary feats of the human body. How do athletes move so fast or jump so high? How do they get 'in the zone', and what happens inside our bodies and minds when we take part in sport, performance or dance?

Endorsed by Sir Steve Redgrave CBE and a key strand of LOCOG's national Get Set+ programme, In the Zone will delight, inspire, entertain and engage people with the amazing human body, against a backdrop of Games-time excitement.

The Wellcome Trust is delighted to have London 2012 Inspire Mark accreditation for In the Zone. The initiative has two main strands:

FREE experiment kits for all UK schools Following the success of the Great Plant Hunt and Survival Rivals in 2009, In the Zone will provide a physiology-related science experiment for every UK child of school age. Boxes brimming with high-quality practical equipment and supporting resources will be delivered to every UK school and further education college in early 2012.
Interactive touring exhibition Touring across the UK in 2012, this will be a high-quality immersive experience for the whole family. Visitors will be entertained by buskers, interactive high-tech exhibits and guided investigations exploring how their body works. Come along to capture your movement with a high-speed camera, see your veins, sharpen your reaction time and race for gold in a show-stopping finish, and share the fun with friends and family via social media.

Engaging Science projects

Throughout 2012 a number of our funded projects will be of particular interest because of the way they explore some of the themes of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. Ranging from moving-image artworks that investigate the performance of athletes to footballs made from pigs' bladders and a fast-paced show on the role of biomedical science in the Games.
