Colour Coded

Still from Colour Coded
An exceptionally well-rounded piece of work produced by and for young people, Colour Coded provides a probing yet highly entertaining exploration of why our skin is the colour it is.

Featuring a music promo with a message about melanin, a short drama about skin bleaching and a host of special features, including interviews with dermatology experts, 'Colour Coded' provides teachers with a wealth of material whether teaching citizenship, science or personal, social and health education.

Funded through the Pulse scheme (now replaced by the Arts Awards), 'Colour Coded' brought the BAFTA-winning television and radio production company Resource Base together with the Hardnoxx Film Project, run by emerging talent Matthew Walters. Working together with scientists, schools and the local community of Birmingham, the team's collaboration developed into both an ongoing relationship between the artists and scientists as well as a high-quality DVD package.

Originally targeted at Key Stage 4, the project was so successful it is now being repurposed for a younger, Key Stage 2 audience.

One teacher said: "I used 'Colour Coded' with a group of high school students on the Isle of Wight to stimulate discussion and develop creative ideas. As the island is really lacking in cultural and racial diversity, it gave our discussion a real starting point and focus. The discussion didn't feel forced and I found the students were far more engaged as they knew students like them had helped put the DVD together. I would highly recommend 'Colour Coded' as a useful teaching resource."
