News and Media

Communicating your work via the news media can be an efficient way of reaching a range of people.

Getting involved with the news media

The Media Office can help you publicise your latest research paper, in liaison with your institution's press office and other funding bodies, to ensure maximum publicity for your work. We can help in all aspects of news media work, from identifying 'the story', drafting press releases and setting up interviews to devising a coherent media strategy.

The news media work to specific, immediate deadlines. We can help adapt your media responses for the differing deadlines and agendas of print, broadcast and online journalists at a local, national or international level.

We work closely with our publishing team, and can help you achieve coverage on our website, through news and features, video and the Wellcome Trust blog.

We can also put you in touch with journalists seeking expert opinion and knowledge and enable you to provide informed comment on breaking science stories in your field.

Some top tips for working with the media can be found in our Guide to Working with the Media [PDF 630KB].

The Science Media Centre provides a national contact point for journalists wanting to contact researchers; it also provides guidelines and formal training events.

British Science Association Media Fellowships provide you with the opportunity to work with national press, broadcast or internet journalists via a three- to eight-week summer placement.
