Professor Malcolm Molyneux

Biography

I came to Malawi in 1974, working first in a mission hospital and then as physician in the national referral hospital in Blantyre. From 1984-1995 I was in the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool, and then returned to Malawi to direct a programme of clinical research funded by the Wellcome Trust, UK, and working within the College of Medicine (COM), University of Malawi. This research programme is closely linked with the University of Liverpool and many of its projects are conducted in the national hospital, hence its title: Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW). Our aim is to study diseases of local importance (malaria and HIV are central themes), and to work with COM in the training of staff in clinical and scientific research that is relevant to Malawi's health needs.
