Bioethics, Research and Benefits: Defining the Context of a Global Dialogue
Abstract
This presentation will aim to contextualise discussions at the 6th Global Forum on Bioethics in Research to current issues and concerns regarding global health. Contemporary interest in the research-to-policy interface and the recent World Summit on Health Research have highlighted the 'know-do' gap, and will be discussed. The role of provision of health benefits as a critical 'unfinished agenda' of previous research will be explored using examples from Africa. A focused discourse on the definitions and types of benefits that encompass health research will be raised to demonstrate the diversity of issues that need consideration. Towards the end, the notion of specific situations that will defy expected norms and standards for research will be elaborated on. Finally, questions will be raised about the role of this Global Forum and how it can influence global health decisions, especially those affecting health research.
