The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research

This resource provides advice and guidance on animal welfare in laboratory research and the 3Rs, namely the replacement, refinement and reduction of animal studies. Funds are also available from the Wellcome Trust to support high-quality research that advances the 3Rs.

We also contribute to the funding of the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs), which promotes the development and implementation of the 3Rs in biomedical, biological and veterinary research.

The NC3Rs can provide guidance to achieve best practice in all aspects of laboratory animal science and welfare. The Trust seeks expert advice from the NC3Rs on grant proposals involving primate research.

Funding schemes are also available from the NC3Rs to scientists wishing to pursue research that will advance knowledge in and application of the 3Rs and laboratory animal welfare. Examples of work recently funded are the development of an in vitro model for the anterior region of the eye and the development of a cell-based diabetic wound bioassay.
