Clinical Research Facilities put research into practice

Nurse with a patient
Five Wellcome Trust-funded Clinical Research Facilities support clinical research in the UK.

In the Clinical Research Facilities, teams of doctors, nurses and biomedical researchers study the causes of diseases and try out new medical treatments and procedures.

Research on patients is essential if new diseases are to be fully understood and new therapies tested. Patient-oriented research is difficult to carry out and requires facilities such as these, where specialist staff and care is available.

Each of the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facilities has specific research areas:

  • Birmingham: endocrinology, immunotherapy and cardiac studies
  • Cambridge: diabetes and ovarian cancer
  • Edinburgh: ageing, heart disease, bowel cancer, liver transplants and weight gain
  • Manchester: tissue injury, gene therapy in vascular disease and osteoporosis
  • Southampton: nutrition, food allergies and sleeping disorders.

The Clinical Research Facilities are part of the Wellcome Trust's support for clinical research, to ensure patients benefit from our investment in research.
