Instructions for authors: how to prepare an article

Feature articles should be no more than 1500 words. The maximum length for other articles (including book reviews) should be 800 words.

Please submit all contributions either on disk or by email (to sanjoy.bhattacharya@york.ac.uk), along with a paper copy of the article.

To avoid any application conversion difficulties, please save files as .txt files (i.e. in their simplest form).

Any pictorial material is encouraged. All images are returned to contributors following publication of their article.

Please supply full contact details (name address, phone, fax, email).

Wellcome History house style

All material, once accepted for publication, is sent to the Wellcome Trust Publishing Department for editing and layout.

To speed the editing process, please follow the house style points below.

General

  • All publications, films, TV series, genus and species names should be in italics
  • Define all abbreviations and acronyms
  • Avoid using ampersands
  • Use -ise spelling, as opposed to -ize
  • Format dates Wednesday 15 May 1998 (i.e. no -th or commas).

Numbers and units

  • Spell out numbers of ten and below except with units or for levels, classes etc. where the number follows (e.g. 6 kg, six samples, level 6).
  • Do not use commas in numbers greater than a thousand. For numbers of ten thousand or higher, use a space after each group of three digits (e.g. 4500, 13 786, 4 567 933).
  • Days, months and years, although units, should be spelt out when ten or less.
