UKCRC-Wellcome Trust Frontiers Meeting report

Use of Electronic Patient Records for Research and Health Benefit

24-25 May 2007

This is the report of a meeting that brought together senior policy makers in Government, industry and academia interested in developing a research service that is integrated with the National Programme for IT within the NHS.

The meeting aimed to provide a vision of how patient information in the NHS Care Records Service could be used for health benefit and medical research in the UK by showcasing real examples of research practice from around the world. These examples showed:

how patient records can be collected, quality assured and integrated with other data sets

  • what research can be done with pseudo/anonymised data
  • how medical research can be maximised without compromising patient confidentiality and public trust.

A video of this Frontiers Meeting can be seen online.
