Putting NHS Research on the Map

In conjunction with the London Regional Office of the NHS Executive, the Wellcome Trust has mapped the current state of research in the National Health Service. The findings have been published in 'Putting NHS Research on the Map: An analysis of scientific publications in England, 1990-97', providing a comprehensive guide to research activity within the NHS in England.

The report analyses the publication outputs in the NHS, looking both at NHS-funded research and that supported by other organisations including the Wellcome Trust. As well as information on the geographic distribution of outputs, it also covers the balance between clinical and basic research; outputs in different medical specialities; and the extent and nature of collaboration. The report will be of value to policy makers and others with an interest in research funding within the NHS.
