Mapping the Landscape

How strong is UK science? Though often asked, the question is difficult to answer, particularly in a rigorous, quantitative manner. By using the Research Outputs Database (ROD), an in-house database collating information on all papers published in biomedical fields, the Wellcome Trust has produced a definitive guide to the UK's research outputs between 1988 and 1995. 'Mapping the Landscape: National biomedical research outputs 1988-95' is the first in what will be a series of publications benchmarking UK biomedical science.

'Mapping the Landscape' compares the UK's research outputs with those of other leading scientific nations. It also assesses the relative strength of the UK in 20 subfields of biomedical research. With over 100 graphs and tables, it represents a unique and exhaustive reference work. In addition, short overviews draw out the key messages from the accumulated data. 'Mapping the Landscape' will be an invaluable resource for policy makers, research evaluators and anyone interested in the state of the nation's research base.

'Mapping the Landscape' covers four major themes:

  • How does UK biomedical research fare on a global scale?
  • What is our national output like?
  • Who is funding UK biomedical research?
  • What impact is our biomedical research having?
