On Doing Qualitative Research Linked to Ethical Healthcare

This report is based on the proceedings of a conference held in London in October 1999, entitled 'Qualitative research: a vital resource for ethical healthcare'.

The report aims to explore how qualitative social research can be useful in multidisciplinary initiatives intended to inform ethical healthcare. It is aimed at experienced researchers from other disciplines who wish to expand their skills to include qualitative social research. It seeks to encourage these researchers to approach qualitative social scientists and plan joint work that balances and does justice to each of the disciplines involved.

The report should also be of interest to policy makers, medical journal editors and referees of qualitative protocols and papers that are submitted to funding bodies, ethics committees and journals.
