Review of the Wellcome Trust Biomedical Ethics Programme

The Wellcome Trust's Biomedical Ethics Programme is being expanded. The Programme will run for a further six years with an increased budget of £15 million.

The Biomedical Ethics Programme will continue to support social, ethics, legal and public policy research with a focus on neuroscience, mental health and genetics. In addition, international research ethics will be developed as a subject area. As it enters its new phase, the Programme will also develop ways of making the funded research useful to policy makers and other users.

Earlier this year, the Biomedical Ethics Programme was reviewed to assess progress towards its aims and to inform decisions on the future of the initiative. A report describing the review is available below. The results from the review informed the decision to continue and further develop the Programme.

The report is being made generally available in the interests of openness. The information contained in the report may be of interest to researchers and others with an interest in the role and the development of the Biomedical Ethics Programme since its inception in 1997.
