1. Update on new Grant System launch
As detailed in the February issue">February issue, the Trust will replace its existing grant management systems with a single, easy-to-use integrated web-based system. Profile-based payment of grants will be introduced in October 2007 and the new system will be opened to new applications at the end of January 2008. During a transition period of three to four months, most outstanding applications will be processed through to consideration on the existing systems.
We will provide you with more detailed information and your login and password for the new system later this year.
2. Grant Conditions update
The Wellcome Trust's Grant Conditions [PDF 50KB] have recently been updated mainly regarding payment profiles and the associated requirement for spend reports. Your attention is drawn, in particular, to sections 3, 4 and 6. These updated Conditions now apply to all grants.

4. Strategic Translation Awards in Seeding Drug Discovery - call for proposals
The next deadline for preliminary applications for our five-year, £91m initiative 'Seeding Drug Discovery' is 9 November 2007. The initiative assists researchers to establish and advance drug-like small-molecule-based therapeutic projects in areas of unmet medical need. Applications are welcomed from across all therapeutic areas. Previous awards have been made to projects tackling obesity, cancer, MRSA and multiple sclerosis.
5. Medicine, Society and History updates
As a result of an extensive review, our UK Biomedical Ethics Programme has now been revised. Full details of grant schemes offered.
History of Medicine Research Fellowships - some changes have been made to application deadlines and review process for these fellowships.
100th award in Research Resources - the Wellcome Trust has managed to safeguard the laboratory notebooks of twice Nobel prize-winner and eminent scientist, Fred Sanger. As an important snapshot of science history, the 35 notebooks form part of the Biochemical Society's Archive, through our Research Resources in Medical History funding scheme.
Competition for a Strategic Award in Medical Humanities - a competition for a major award in Medical Humanities is soon to be launched. Look out for more details on our website in the next few days.
6. Public Engagement workshop: Friday 5 October 2007
If you're thinking about engaging people with your research, or have just started to do so, register for our free one-day introductory engagement workshop at the Wellcome Trust on Friday 5 October 2007.
7. Nature Precedings
A new document-sharing website for scientists has been launched this month by Nature Publishing Group (NPG) in collaboration with the Trust and other partners. 'Nature Precedings' is a free service allowing biomedical researchers to post manuscripts, presentations and other documents, providing a means to rapidly disseminate results, solicit feedback and claim priority.
8. Grantholders eligible for concession
Until 30 September, there's a special introductory rate of just £45 (£28 concessions) for a year's membership of the Wellcome Collection Club.
The Club provides a unique and intimate environment for scientists, artists, historians, researchers, students and anyone with a keen interest in medicine, life and art to meet.
Honorary members include Antony Gormley, John Sulston, Francis Wells, Marc Quinn and A S Byatt.
