1. Grant Funding Policy

Changes from 1 October 2007 onwards

New funding arrangements will be introduced for grants awarded from 1 October 2007 onwards.

All new grants will be awarded in US dollars, pounds sterling or euros. Grant applicants from outside the UK will be asked to select which of these three currencies they would like to use.

Flexible Funding Allowances and Inflationary Allowances will be combined into one consolidated allowance. The value of this allowance will be determined by the value of the award and the duration of the grant.

Further information will be detailed on our website.

2. Changes to application forms

Updated application forms will be published on eGrants in April 2007. Changes include additional questions on the use of animals and amendments in line with our new grant funding policy detailed above. It is our policy, when a new version of an application form is published, to allow applicants two months to complete and submit an application already in progress on a previous version of the form.

3. Publishing your research and the media

Are you about to publish?

Are you working on some interesting research? Or could you act as an expert, commenting on the science behind the headlines?

Whether it is by issuing a press release or acting as a buffer between you and the journalists, our Media Office will offer you all the support you need to reach a wider audience. We will always respect embargoes and work closely with you, your institution, co-funders and the relevant journals.

To notify us about a forthcoming paper or to discuss working with the media in general, please contact:

Blackwell's need your feedback

Blackwell's Publishing is conducting an online survey to help ascertain which resources would be of most help to authors when publishing their articles in peer-reviewed journals, and what publishers could do to make the whole writing, reviewing and publishing process clearer and easier.

Take part in the online survey before 9 April 2007 for the chance to win an iPod.

The BA Media Fellowships

Applications are now open for the BA's Media Fellowship scheme, intended to create greater awareness and understanding of the workings of the media among practising scientists. The fellowships provide placements working with a national press, broadcast or internet journalist.

4. New CD-ROM on Malaria

A third edition of the Trust's best-selling educational CD-ROM on malaria has just been published. The CD, developed with input from Trust-funded researchers, the World Health Organization and others, gives an up-to-date overview of the subject from basic biology through to the latest treatment and control guidelines. It is suitable for anyone teaching malaria or for new researchers wanting an accessible, current introduction to the topic.

H. influenzae type b
H. influenzae type b is one of the developing world's major childhood killers, responsible for half a million deaths and three million episodes of serious disease a year among children. Now, researchers at the Kenya Medical Research Institute–Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kenya, led by Dr Anthony Scott (Research Career Development Fellow in Clinical Tropical Medicine), have shown that they can reduce the incidence of Hib by up to 88 per cent among children under five years by introducing a routine childhood immunisation programme. They are currently working with the Ministry of Health in Kenya to tackle the disease.

Creating a global map of malaria risk worldwide
The first global map of malaria risk in almost 40 years has been created, the result of a collaboration between Trust-funded researchers from the University of Oxford and the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research programme in Kenya. The Malaria Atlas Project (MAP), co-ordinated by Professor Bob Snow (Principal Research Fellow) and Dr Simon Hay (Senior Research Fellow), aims to form an evidence base for allocating resources for malaria control on a global scale. A recent paper describes the advanced methodology and challenges involved in assembling a global database of malaria parasite prevalence, which will form part of MAP.

Support for public engagement
A new web resource for Wellcome-funded researchers interested in engaging the public with their science has been set up. These pages provide information on engaging non-specialists, local and national engagement opportunities, as well as links to online resources. Find news of upcoming workshops, events and research profiles here.

Strategic Plan updates
Find out about the Trust's progress towards the aims and objectives we set out in our five-year Strategic Plan 2005-2010 at the Strategic Plan updates section of our website. Also have a look at our research profiles that illustrate where the researchers we fund have made significant contributions, or we have made an impact directly.
