1. Investigator Awards update

See Investigator Award application and award statistics and find out about the applications and awards made for the third round. The next full application closing date is 20 July 2012. Details of funded Investigator Award holders and the areas they are working in are now available.

Funding updates

2. Improved flexibility of Wellcome Trust senior biomedical schemes

We are aligning Principal and Senior Research Fellowships with Investigator Awards and increasing the number of funding opportunities for Fellowship candidates. Read more.

3. Re-launched: International Engagement Awards

Funding projects to support Wellcome Trust-funded researchers in low- and middle-income countries to engage the public and/or policy makers with biomedical and health research. Read more.

4. New: International Recruitment Supplement

The newly launched IRS is designed to reduce the barriers to recruiting the best biomedical scientists to the UK academic community by contributing, in partnership with the host organisation, to start-up packages and other costs associated with their recruitment. Read more.

5. Changes to the Health Innovation Challenge Fund

The scheme is moving away from the themed call approach and will instead invite proposals across various research topics. Next application deadline: 14 May 2012.

6. New: Pathfinder Awards

A new scheme designed to support academic-industry partnerships for early-stage applied research and development projects in orphan and neglected disease areas. Read more.

8. Grant inflation rate

From 1 April 2012, the new annual compound inflation rate for new UK grant awards will be 1.3 per cent per year. Read more.

9. Engaging Science grant applications now on eGrants

Application forms for People Awards and Small Arts Awards are now available on eGrants. Applicants and organisations for these schemes will need to register on eGrants. Organisations currently registered on eGrants may wish to update their Head of Department lists to reflect the wider range of potential applicants. Contact the eGrants helpdesk for advice.

11. Brains: The mind as matter

Our major free exhibition seeks to explore what humans have done to brains in the name of medical intervention, scientific enquiry, cultural meaning and technological change. 29 March-17 June 2012.

To coincide with World Malaria Day, we have launched our review of malaria research over the past 20 years, which looks at our role in the field, identifying key breakthroughs and challenges, and providing expert reflections in the field. Download the full report.
