1. Investigator Awards update

The next closing date for Investigator Awards in Biomedical Science is 2 March. Find out more about application and award numbers and success rates for the first two rounds of the Investigator Award in Biomedical Science scheme. Information is also available on the recipients of the first and second rounds of the scheme.

2. Peer Review College

From October 2012, the Trust will be trialling the use of a peer review college to undertake the majority of our remote written peer review on applications to our senior biomedical funding schemes. College members will be drawn from our community of senior Trust-funded scientists and other UK and overseas researchers and, to ensure adequate breadth of expertise, will be supplemented with additional specialist external reviewers where required. Further information regarding the role and composition of the college will be available later this year.

Other updates

5. In the Zone – exploring the mind and body in motion

Building on the excitement of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we are introducing In the Zone – our UK-wide initiative to engage people with the science of how their body works during sport and movement. Endorsed by Sir Steve Redgrave CBE, In the Zone is a combination of exciting experiment kits for all primary and secondary schools in the UK and an interactive exhibition for families that will tour across all four nations in 2012. Follow the action on Twitter @inthezonewt.

Throughout 2012 several of our public engagement projects, funded through the Engaging Science grants programme, will be of particular interest – they explore some of the themes of the Games.

6. Big Picture: Exercise, Energy and Movement out now

The latest issue of 'Big Picture', the Wellcome Trust's free educational resource for teachers and learners, is all about the biological, social and psychological aspects of movement and exercise. Download a copy and see the related online resources.

7. UK BIOBANK: Launch of procedures for accessing the resource

UK Biobank has launched its Access Procedures, which govern the way the resource can be used by scientists to improve the health of future generations. UK Biobank expects to go live with its online application system in the spring. For more information, visit the UK Biobank website.

8. Masterclass in communication for Wellcome researchers and groups

The Wellcome Trust Narrative Skills workshops provide expert coaching on explaining your research to public audiences and an opportunity to hone your story with the help of communications professionals. Find out more about the workshops online or contact us to secure your place.

9. Getting media coverage of your research

Do you have a story to tell? Are you about to publish an interesting research paper? Have you reached a significant milestone in your research? If so, please let us know. Our Media Office has produced a Guide to Working with the Media, with helpful advice and tips. It can help you to reach a wider audience through the media by helping you to prepare media strategy, write press releases and coordinate interviews. To obtain your free copy, contact Craig Brierley.

10. News from the NC3Rs

Applications are now invited for the 2012 project grant and pilot study grants schemes. An ASAB/SEB/NC3Rs Symposium, implementing the 3Rs in behavioural and physiological research, will be held 4-5 July 2012.
