1. Biomedical resource and multi-user equipment grants

Applications are now open for biomedical resource grants and multi-user equipment grants as part of our themed Strategic Awards.

Funding updates

2. Global health trials initiative

Applications are now open for the second round of an initiative to fund late-stage global health trials of health interventions designed to improve health in low- and middle-income countries.

3. HICF theme 5

The fifth theme for the Health Innovation Challenge Fund is for projects that improve the detection, diagnosis, surveillance and containment of infectious agents. The deadline for preliminary applications is 2 September 2011. Find out more.

4. Biomedical science Investigator Awards scheme

Details of the first recipients of our Investigator Awards scheme were announced last month.

All applications will now be processed according to published closing dates. The closing date for the next round of full applications is 1 September 2011. Closing dates for future rounds will be announced in due course.

5. List of grants awarded

Details of all grants awarded by the Wellcome Trust for the period 1 October 2009 to 30 September 2010 are now available.

7. New top-tier open access journal for biomedical and life sciences research

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust have announced that they are to support a new, top-tier, open access journal for biomedical and life sciences research. Find out more.

The founding principles are established, but many details remain to be worked through; you can assist us by giving us your input, which will help the editorial team develop the journal. Your answers are important to us and will be kept confidential. Thanks for your help. Response deadline: 1 August 2011.

8. Wellcome Images

The Wellcome Images biomedical image resource is continually looking for images to help develop the collection for its growing global audience. Contributors retain copyright and are fully acknowledged when their images are published or broadcast. If you'd like to contribute please contact images@wellcome.ac.uk for more information.

9. Wellcome Trust communications training - Narrative Skills Workshops

The Wellcome Trust will be hosting two of these workshops in September 2011:

15-16 September -  for Sir Henry Wellcome Fellows and postdoctoral researchers
22-23 September - for Senior Research Fellows and principal investigators

Led by an ex-BBC executive producer, these free workshops provide Wellcome Trust-funded researchers with some of the best training in developing and honing the stories behind their careers, their work and the value of the research they do. 10. Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst

Science Minister David Willetts visited the site of the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst for a topping out ceremony on 14 July. The open innovation research campus will open for tenants in 2012.

11. Science Writing Prize

We are pleased to announce that we received almost 800 entries for our inaugural Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize 2011 in association with the Guardian and the Observer. The winners will be announced on 12 October here.

12. Strategic challenges

In our Strategic Plan 2010-20, we announced that we would be focusing on five challenge areas. One of those challenges is understanding the brain, and projects that we have funded within it cover themes such as:

  • Integrating research efforts.
  • Mental health disorders.
  • Translational research and innovation.
  • Public engagement and dialogue.
