1. Medical Humanities Investigator Awards
Our Investigator Awards have now been expanded to cover the medical humanities and bioethics. We are inviting applications from world-class scholars asking the most important questions at the interface of science, medicine and the humanities.

The scheme will cover two categories, Medical History and Humanities and Ethics and Society, enabling scholars to pursue individual, bold visions with greater flexibility.

Applications for the awards will open in June.

Funding updates

2. Enhancement funding
Funding for enhancements is now available. Enhancements are designed to provide additional funding for our existing grantholders to explore important new opportunities or paths of discovery as their work unfolds or to support unanticipated costs, such as new equipment or access to technologies. Prospective applicants must contact the Trust to discuss any potential application.

3. Senior Investigator Awards in Biomedical Science
Unsuccessful applicants for the Senior Investigator Awards scheme in Biomedical Science will normally be expected to wait 12 months, rather than two years, before resubmitting an application. Previously unsuccessful applicants should contact the Trust for advice.

4. Inflation
The Trust's inflation allowance for new grant awards has been revised to 1.7 per cent per year. This change came into effect from 1 March 2011.

5. Flexible Funding Allowances
For awards made from 1 October 2011, the Flexible Funding Allowance will only be provided on studentships and training and intermediate fellowships. For other grant schemes, where FFAs will no longer be provided, support for publication costs (with the exception of open access), formal transferable skills and personal development training, and PhD student fees for individuals employed on a Trust grant may be requested in the application.

Other updates

7. Endorsement logos to download

8. Wellcome Trust Science Writing Prize 2011
In association with the Guardian and the Observer. The hunt for future science writers is on! Submit an 800-word article before 20 May 2011 and you could join the next generation of science communicators. Find out more online.

9. Dirt: The filthy reality of everyday life
Wellcome Collection's major new exhibition, ‘Dirt’, will reveal the fascinating world of filth that remains one of the very last taboos. Bringing together around 200 artefacts, the exhibition uncovers a rich history of disgust and delight in the grimy truths and dirty secrets of our past, and points to the uncertain future of filth, which poses a significant risk to our health but is also vital to our existence. The exhibition runs until 31 August 2011.

10. Career Tracker survey
A big thank you to everyone who has taken part in the Wellcome Trust's longitudinal career tracking study so far! The study tracks the careers of a selection of early- and intermediate-stage Trust awardees to gain a better understanding of awardees' career progression over time.

The next wave of the survey will be launched this May and results from this will be made available later in the year. If you are invited to take part in the survey, please respond as it helps the Trust ascertain the longer term impact of its funding and informs our future strategy.

11. Clinical Methodology Conference, October 2011
Interested parties can now register for the conference. The deadline for Early Bird registration is 29 June 2011.
