Pearls of the Orient

Asian Treasures from the Wellcome Library

In this lavishly illustrated book each chapter reflects a different region of Asia, its people and culture, in which something of the variety of the Asian collections preserved in the Wellcome Library can be appreciated.

The book is a collection of essays written by Asian experts from the UK, Germany and Russia - all of whom have worked on the Wellcome Asian Collections over the last 25 years. Containing many beautiful colour illustrations, the book demonstrates the multiplicity of religious and cultural backgrounds, languages and scripts, as exemplified by the Wellcome Library's Asian Collections.

The editor, Nigel Allan, was Curator of the Oriental Collections in the Wellcome Library from 1978 to 2005.
