Annual Review 2011: Focus area 3 - Exploring medicine in historical and cultural contexts

We strive to embed biomedical science in the historical and cultural landscape, so that it is valued and there is mutual trust between researchers and the wider public.

Wellcome Collection, our public venue exploring medicine, life and art, goes from strength to strength, and you can read more about its successes this year in the ‘Annual Review’. In addition, we made Strategic Awards to two projects aimed at encouraging debate putting science centre stage, awarded the 2010 Wellcome Trust Book Prize and saw a short film made with our support win a clutch of awards. Other highlights of the year included funding for a touring inflatable operating theatre that lets people simulate surgery, and research into the history of 'translational medicine'.
