Innovative new web interface improves access to UK’s largest free online life sciences resource. Read the press release or try out the new site at http://beta.ukpmc.ac.uk.

Based on PubMed Central (PMC) - the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature - UK PubMed Central1 provides a stable, permanent and free-to-access online digital archive of full-text, peer-reviewed research publications.

Launched in January 2007, the initial phase of developing UK PubMed Central involved mirroring the PMC database, and implementing a manuscript submission system - UKMSS - to enable UK scientists to submit their research papers for inclusion in UKPMC.

In 2008 the UK PubMed Central Funders’ Group2 awarded further funding to enable a consortium of suppliers, including the British Library, Mimas and NaCTem at the University of Manchester and the European Bioinformatics Institute, to undertake a unique and innovative three year development programme for the UKPMC service.

The developments focus on five key areas:

  • enhancing information retrieval and knowledge discovery
  • providing access to additional content
  • developing the user interface
  • providing comprehensive metadata to CiteXplore
  • grant reporting.

For more information, including details of how the biomedical and health research communities will be involved in the development process, see the Future plans page on the UK PubMed Central website.

1 UKPMC is part of a network of PMC International (PMCI) repositories.PMCI is a collaborative effort between the US National Library of Medicine (NLM), the publishers whose journal content makes up the PMC archive, and organisations in other countries that share NLM's interest in archiving life sciences literature. The long-term goal of PMCI is to create a network of digital archives that can share some or all of their respective locally deposited content with others in the network.
2 UKPMC is a service of the UKPMC Funders Group, working in partnership with the British Library, University of Manchester and the European Bioinformatics Institute.
