Wellcome Trust open access funding

Open access funding for original research papers

There are two ways in which Wellcome Trust-funded authors can access funds to cover open access publishing costs for research papers

1. Institutions in receipt of funding for Open Access

From 1 October 2014, the Wellcome Trust and five other members of the Association of Medical Research Charities established a Joint Charity Open Access Fund (COAF).

Awards have been made to 36 UK Institutions to meet open access publishing costs for original research papers arising from research funded by one or more of the Charity Open Access Fund partner charities.

If you are based at one of the 36 universities and research institutes in receipt of a COAF block award, please contact the institution directly. If you are unsure who the appropriate contact at your institution is, please contact the Wellcome Trust at openaccess@wellcome.ac.uk.

2. Wellcome Trust-funded researchers at other institutions

Researchers at institutions not in receipt of block awards for open access should email the following details to openaccess@wellcome.ac.uk:

  • your current employing institution
  • title of the paper
  • Wellcome Trust grant reference number
  • journal title
  • proposed date of publication
  • cost of the open access fee.

Your research grant will be supplemented and the institution will be able to claim reimbursement for these additional costs in the usual way. Open access funding will also be provided where a research grant has ended.

Open access funding for scholarly monographs and book chapters

The awards made to institutions for open access through the Charity Open Access Fund cannot be used to cover the cost of open access fees associated with Trust-funded scholarly monographs and book chapters.

To receive reimbursement for these costs researchers should email the following details to openaccess@wellcome.ac.uk:

  • your current employing institution
  • title of the monograph or book chapter
  • Wellcome Trust grant reference number
  • publisher name
  • proposed date of publication
  • cost of the open access fee.

Your research grant will be supplemented and the institution will be able to claim reimbursement for these additional costs in the usual way. Open access funding will also be provided where a research grant has ended.

Information for OA payment administrators

A RIN and UUK report (March 2009), ‘Paying for open access publication charges’, offers practical guidance for those who administer OA costs within institutions.
