Wellcome Trust open access funding
There are two ways in which Wellcome Trust-funded authors can access additional funds to cover open access publishing costs.
From 1 October 2014, the Wellcome Trust and other members of the Association of Medical Research Charities are establishing a joint Charity Open Access Fund.
In addition to the institutions listed below, open access awards made from the joint fund will also be provided to The Institute of Cancer Research, Keele University, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Sussex.
Please note the joint fund cannot be used to meet the costs associated with making scholarly monographs and book chapters open access; please contact email@example.com regarding reimbursement of these costs.

- Wellcome Trust grant reference number
- journal title
- proposed date of publication
- cost of the open access fee.
Your grant will then be supplemented and the institution will be able to claim reimbursement in the usual way. Open access funding will also be provided where a research grant has terminated.
Information for OA payment administrators
A RIN and UUK report (March 2009), ‘Paying for open access publication charges’, offers practical guidance for those who administer OA costs within institutions.
Other publishing costs
Please note that the open access funding cannot be used to cover- the cost of page and colour plate charges. For information on how these costs can be met see ‘ Allowed and disallowed cost’s’
*The Trust has extended its open access policy to include scholarly monographs and book chapters authored or coauthored by Trust grantholders that arise as part of their grant-funded research. The extended policy currently applies to grantholders who were awarded a grant on or after 1 October 2013. From October 2014 the policy will come into effect for all existing grantholders. Universities in receipt of Open Access awards can use the funds provided for the payment of publisher’s open access monograph processing charges.
