Wellcome Trust open access funding

There are two ways in which Wellcome Trust-funded authors can access additional funds to cover open access publishing costs.

1. Universities in receipt of Open Access Awards

Awards have been made to the following institutions to meet open access publishing costs for research papers arising from Wellcome Trust-funded research.*

For information about claiming open access fees follow the links to the individual institutional guides, where available, or contact the institution's research grants office.

2. Wellcome Trust-funded research at other institutions

Researchers at institutions not listed above, requiring funding to cover open access fees, should email the following details to openaccess@wellcome.ac.uk:

  • your current employing institution
  • title of the paper
  • Wellcome Trust grant reference number
  • journal title
  • proposed date of publication
  • cost of the open access fee.

The grant will then be supplemented and the institution will be reimbursed in the usual way. Funding is also available where a grant has terminated.

Information for OA payment administrators

A RIN and UUK report (March 2009), ‘Paying for open access publication charges’, offers practical guidance for those who administer OA costs within institutions.

Other publishing costs

Please note that the additional open access funding cannot be used to cover additional page and colour plate charges.

Wellcome Trust-funded authors can, however, use the inflation/flexible funding allowance (FFA) to cover these costs.

*The Trust is extending its open access policy to include scholarly monographs and book chapters authored or co-authored by Trust grant-holders that arise as part of their grant-funded research. The extended policy will apply from October 2013 to all new grant-holders (i.e. those who received a grant on or after 1 October 2013), and from October 2014 to all existing grant-holders. Universities in receipt of Open Access awards will receive supplementary funds for the payment of publisher’s open access monograph processing charges.
