Wellcome Trust open access funding

The Wellcome Trust recognises that open access fees are a legitimate research cost and as such will meet them to assist grantholders to comply with the Trust's Grant Conditions.

There are two mechanisms whereby Trust-funded researchers can access additional funds to cover these costs depending upon you research location.

1. Top 30 Trust-funded universities

Awards have been made to a number of institutions to meet the cost of open access charges incurred for research papers arising from Trust-funded research. A list of institutions in receipt of this funding is provided below.

For information about reclaiming open access fees please go to the individual institutional guides, where available, or contact your research office.

2. Other Wellcome Trust-funded research

Trust-funded researchers at institutions not in receipt of additional funds, requiring funding to cover open access fees, should email the following details to openaccess@wellcome.ac.uk:

  • your current employing institution
  • title of the paper
  • Wellcome Trust grant reference number
  • title of the open access publication
  • proposed date of publication
  • amount requested.

The grant will then be supplemented and your institution will be reimbursed in the usual way.

Other publishing costs

Please note that the additional open access funding cannot be used to cover additional page and colour plate charges.

Trust-funded researchers can, however, use the inflation/flexible funding allowance (FFA), to cover these costs.
