Influenza

Recent years have seen the emergence of a number of influenza events that are of concern to public health. The outbreak of the novel swine-origin H1N1 influenza virus in 2009 took the world by surprise, causing the first influenza pandemic since 1968. The H5N1 'bird flu' virus has continued to sporadically infect humans for over a decade. Seasonal flu continues to take its annual toll and has raised cause for greater concern recently, with the emergence of drug-resistant seasonal influenza strains.

Working with a number of UK and international partners, the Trust has responded by initiating a number of influenza-related activities in order to identify and facilitate priority research.

Influenza activities at the Wellcome Trust are coordinated by Professor Frederick Hayden ( f.hayden@wellcome.ac.uk) and Dr Dan Korbel ( d.korbel@wellcome.ac.uk) as part of the International Activities department.
